Cultivating a City of Peace :: Troy, NY

Secret History

If we could read the secret history of our enemies, we should find in each person’s life sorrow and suffering enough to disarm all hostility.

– Longfellow

How Can I/We create Peace?

For 2010, 8 of these banners were created and hung at various places in the Troy area.  Markers were tied with them to encourage folks walking on the street to write their own answers to this question: How can I/We create Peace?

We encourage you to share what you think you/we can do to create peace.  Please leave a comment!

Some folks also added their thoughts at the blog site.  Here are those comments:

I think it has to start with me. What I bring to the world directly impacts those around me. It ripples out. How can I hope for world peace if I am not making the space around me peaceful?

1000 Acts of Peace

We believe that peace starts from within and, therefore, is expressed diferently by different people. It may be a silent prayer or meditation, singing a song for peace with others, writing a blog about peace, planting a tree for peace, or a RAOK (“random act of kindness”).

You can find many great ideas at the International Day of Peace website.

This was the theme for our 2009 celebration.  Here are some comments we received.

Let your voice be heard! We encourage you to share your act of peace.  Please leave a comment!

My act of peace for everyday is to stay committed to inner peace. This means staying peaceful in all situations by not judging, assuming, or worrying. To remain calm and open-minded. On Sept 21st at lunch time, I will spend 15 minutes in silent prayer for myself and everyone. And I will participate in the celebrations in Troy.

My act of peace is to be still for at least 15 minutes each day, through September 21s, clearing my mind & allowing thoughts to come that would advance the cause of personal, family & communal peace. That day, I will do one thing that was manifested during the quiet time.

Since I journal, I will keep a short record of the daily experience & share it with someone.

Thank you for your efforts.

I will also be sure to send my thoughts and prayers to those who need positive and peaceful energy sent their way; this will include those in the capital region, nationally, and globally.

Live it with a smile on the street, a warmth in my heart, a declenching when I object to someone’s behavior or my own (challenging!), and to continue to be grateful for the experiences that help me want to build peace.

My act of peace is to really listen to what my high school students are saying when they come to me to talk. Instead of asking too many questions or offering my opinion (when I haven’t been asked for it) I will simply give them my time and be a good listener.
